Simple Dress Slim Strategies
You Can Use Today
"Does this make me look fat?" How many times have
you asked yourself this question in the dressing room or as
you were getting dressed in the morning? It is a nearly universal
question right up there in significance with "What is
the meaning of life?" Alright, so it's not that important,
but it is a question we continue to ask. Master these 8 simple
dress slim strategies and you can look 15 pounds thinner in
the 5 minutes it takes you to get dressed in the morning!
I
know what I'm talking about and I'm willing to prove it by
sharing with you a photo of myself. I've always struggled
with my weight. My weight has always been a moving target.
It's up, it's down, and it's everywhere in-between. So learning
how to look pounds thinner has always been more than a passing
interest. In fact, it is probably my single most important
consideration when I'm selecting clothing. If it doesn't make
me look slimmer than I am; I'm not buying it; I'm not wearing
it; I'm not letting it into my closet. In this picture you
see two photos of me that were taken on the same day, just
minutes apart. You see, you really can look 15 pounds thinner
in the 5 minutes it takes to get dressed! Here's how.
A
Column of Color
One of the most effective ways to create the illusion of a
slimmer, trimmer figure is to wear one color from head to
toe. This will instantly and effortlessly create an illusion
of more length. More length = less width = the illusion of
a trimmer figure. In my 'after' photo I'm not wearing a single
color but notice that my skirt and the top under my jacket
are the same color. Notice also that the jacket is nearly
as dark as the skirt and top. This similarity in color value
causes the skirt, jacket, and top combination to visually
read as a vertical column of color. This contrasts sharply
with the 'before' photo where you are much more aware of the
horizontal proportions of my figure.
Dark
Neutrals Rock!
Whenever you wear dark neutral colors you look trimmer than
you do when you are wearing very bright or very light colors.
Light, bright colors appear to 'advance' towards the viewer.
The effect this has it to create the illusion of increased
volume. When you are trying to appear slimmer the last thing
you need is more volume. You can prove this for yourself by
first closing your eyes and then opening your eyes to a squint
and looking at the graphic. Which center square appears larger?
In fact, they are both exactly the same size.
Think
Vertical
Another way to create a slimmer effect is to wear clothing
that emphasizes vertical lines. Our eyes naturally follow
the movement of lines. When you encounter strong vertical
lines your eyes will automatically move vertically. When you
apply this to the figure, creating strong vertical lines with
your clothing creates the impression of more height, less
breadth. You can create vertical line in a variety of ways.
Rows of buttons, decorative stitching, plackets, seam lines
can all potentially create a vertical line.
Balance
and Proportion
Talking about balance and proportion is just another way to
say you want to maintain a pleasing harmony between the various
parts of your figure. If your legs are short you don't want
to do anything that will make them look shorter than they
are. In fact, you may want to create an illusion of greater
length through this part of your body.
The
Perfect Fit
Of all the strategies I've mentioned, a perfect fit is probably
the most important. If you have a waif like figure you can
sometimes get by with a less than perfect fit. But, if you
are carrying a few more pounds than would be ideal, fit becomes
crucial. Nothing will create the illusion of added pounds
quicker than clothing that is either too big or too small.
If the clothes are upsized, the perceived boundaries of your
figure will be extended to the edges of the garments. If,
on the other hand, your clothing is too small, the fabric
will wrinkle and bunch. This draws attention and makes your
figure look fuller.
Fabric
and Pattern
Beware of large, bold, widely spaced patterns. Beware of the
fabrics you choose as they will have a major impact on any
attempt to dress slim. Very crisp or bulky fabrics drape poorly
over the figure and this creates added volume. Fabrics with
a great deal of texture will also add fullness. I personally
love shinny, glitzy fabrics but I have learned to moderate
my natural inclinations when it comes to the clothes I wear.
Very shiny fabrics attract the eye and create an illusion
of greater volume. If you have two identical green skirts,
one shiny and one matte, your bum will look smaller when you
are wearing the matte green skirt. As a result, I now prefer
to limit my use of shiny fabrics to the pillows on my bed
and an occasional evening accessory.

Layer
to create a slimming effect.

Layering
Whenever you wear a third layer garment, this could be a jacket,
vest or sweater layered over you blouse or shirt, you have
an opportunity to create a more slimming appearance. A layering
piece that fits well, doesn't add bulk and skims the body
can camouflage your figure challenges. Your sweet little love
handles may be very apparent when you are wearing only a blouse
or Tee shirt but slip on a jacket or sweater and we can no
longer see them. If you wear the jacket or sweater unbuttoned
there is the additional advantage of another vertical line
at the center of your torso.
Accessories
Focus Attention
Speaking of accessories, where would we be without them? Even
if you would rather not be bothered with this finishing detail,
accessories can be a powerful strategy in your dress slim
arsenal. Accessories focus attention. This means they can
direct attention to your very best features or to those areas
you may consider to be figure challenges. Learn to use accessories
to your advantage and you will have mastered the final dress
slim strategy.
